Every once in a while you get the chance to meet someone who is just so super creative that it makes you green with envy. No matter what they try it turns out perfectly. And if the person wasn’t so darn nice, you might just resent their talent. But you don’t. Instead you feel super special to get to watch them grow and develop and find their niche. And that is exactly how I feel about Kristen from KC Batik.
Kristen and I actually go back a few years since we use to be next door neighbors. Her family moved in when I was pregnant with MillerBug and she was pregnant with her second child (who just happened to be a boy too). She also had an older child who J-Man clicked with instantly and so our families just naturally saw a lot of each other – especially when we were both home after the boys were born. And we would stand out in the driveway and talk while our kids played about how we wanted to create a way to stay home with our kiddos but still do the things we loved. And for Kristen that was crafts! She would run out with a new canvas she had just painted or tell me about a new technique she was trying and they were always so darn cute! And I, being so wise (haha), told her she should open up her own shop!
Well, time passed and her family moved away (which nearly broke J-Man’s heart) but we kept in touch. And it didn’t surprise me at all when late last year, she sent me a message to let me know she had found her niche and was creating custom t-shirts using the batik technique. Now, my first question, being not the super crafty person was “Huh? What is that?” And so she explained:
These tee shirts are made using a method called batik. Hot wax is applied to the fabric using a tjaunting tool. Where the wax is applied to the fabric is where it will remain white in the design. Procion MX fabric dye is then applied to the design to create a whimsical, colorful image. This dye is NOT RIT dye. It adheres to the core of the fabric, not just to the outer layer. This greatly reduces fading over time! And since they can be custom made with the wearer’s favorite things, they are perfect for kids and adults alike!
Now, most of it went straight over my head in the technical sense. But when she sent MillerBug a custom t-shirt, I was amazed at how super cute it was. Instead of the design being printed on so that it could crack or peel, it was like it was made into the shirt!
Now, several things made this shirt instantly one of our favorites. First, the design was super cute. She offers boy, girl and adult designs and from what I’ve seen there is not much she can’t do – she even has a Bigfoot shirt available! Second, I didn’t have to worry about any kind of special care because the dye was essentially a part of the shirt. Let me say, we received our shirt in December and I’ve washed it at least a dozen times so far and the color stays fabulous each and every time. This is how it looked just this morning, after being washed weekly for two months.
Third, it is uniquely MillerBug’s. I don’t have to worry that I’m going to see other children in the same shirt because even though Kristen offers some of the same designs, each one is slightly different.
Out of all of MillerBug’s shirts, this has got to be the most durable and cutest in his collection. He even goes to this closet and pulls it out each day because he loves it and points to the train on his tummy when he wears it. I could really sit here all day and rave about how fabulous these shirts are but you just can’t get it till you actually get it! So, be sure to head on over to KC Batik on Etsy today and pick up your favorite design for yourself or your little one – or let Kristen custom create a shirt that in individually you! And I’d love if you’d show her some love on Facebook and Twitter!
But wait! One of my lucky readers is going to get to try out a KC Batik creation of their very own. I promise it will become your favorite shirt in no time at all! The winner will get to choose their shirt and work with Kristen to make sure it’s perfect for them!
