It has FINALLY gotten warm where we live and the boys and I are in full Spring mode! And while they would prefer to be outside very moment, occasionally mama has to have a break. So, in order to bring the outdoors inside, MillerBug and I have been working on Spring crafts. But I’ve been trying to come up with things that he is really excited about. And just the other day while we were at the park, we saw a butterfly and he was mesmerized. So I decided to come home and come up with a way for him to make his very own butterfly friends that he could create, touch and enjoy! By using bright tissue paper that I already had at home and my old favorite, clothes pins, we were able to create a cute butterfly craft that any little one is sure to love!
What You Will Need
Bright Colored Tissue Paper
Green Pipe Cleaners
How to Make Them
Start of by painting your clothes pins yellow. This is an easy step that you can let your child do and if your kiddos is like mine, he or she will get really excited about the painting part!
Next cut out squares of tissue paper. I chose to do a large square and small square to give our butterflies more color. If you do this, make one square bigger than the other and choose colors that compliment each other. Use 4 to 6 sheets of each color as this will give your butterfly dimension later in the the project.
Next accordion pleat your two colors or tissue paper together.
You will need to pinch the middle of your paper together so that it is flatter. Then slide it into your clothes pin. Once your clothes pin is secured, gently help your child pull apart the layers of tissue paper pulling the shorter ones forward and the longer ones back.
Once your “wings” are ready, all that is left to do is add antenna! To do this, simply use a small paintbrush or pencil and wrap your pipe cleaners around it to form the antenna. Then slide your paintbrush or pencil out and cut off the end.
Glue your antenna to your clothes pins and your butterflies are complete!
Now, all that is left to do is let your child enjoy them! Whether they set them on their dresser as a special friend or take them back outdoors, this fun craft will have you and your kiddo in the spring spirit!
