Around this time of year, my boys start getting really excited for Halloween. They start seeing pumpkins in the store and talking about making the perfect Jack-O-Lantern. Which is perfectly fine except that when you make it in September, it’s pretty rotten by the time Halloween actually gets here. So, I’ve been thinking about a better way to get them excited about Halloween, allow them to make something super cute and do it in a way where they can enjoy it all year long if they want. After looking at a box of mason jars sitting in my basement every time I walked by, inspiration finally hit me! And so the boys and I set to work on super cute Mason Jar Jack-O-Lanterns!
What You Will Need
Mason Jars in your Size of Choice
Orange and Black Tissue Paper
Tea Lights (Candles or Electric)
How to Make It
I found that the easiest way to cover the whole mason jar with orange tissue paper when kids are helping is to tear your tissue paper into long strips and let them do a section at a time. Allow them to work their way around the mason jar applying a thin coat of Mod Podge and then sticking on the tissue paper until the entire jar is covered. Leave a little extra tissue paper at the top so that you’ll be able to tuck it into the jar for a finished look.
Once your jars are completely covered, apply a thick coat of Mod Podge over the top of the tissue paper and allow it to dry overnight.
The next day, let your kiddos cut out eyes and a mouth for each jar in whatever shape they like. Them simply lay them on the dry jar and apply a thin layer over Mod Podge over the top to secure them into place.
Finally, wrap some ribbon around the top of the jar to secure the loose tissue paper in place and you’re done! All that’s left to do is drop in a tea light and light it!
You’ll have an adorable Jack-O-Lantern that is perfect for indoors or outdoors and brings a not-so-spooky feel to any area! Plus your kiddos will love that they were able to help create a classic looking craft that is perfect for before, during and after Halloween!
