Growing up in North Carolina, one thing that I know is good BBQ. In fact, as a little girl my daddy always took my to BBQ restaurants and let me try the different sauces. Since very early on I was a ketchup based sauce fan. I love the sweetness of it as opposed to the tangy vinegar based sauce. However, my favorite ketchup based sauces were the ones that had that hint of spice and sweetness perfectly mingled.
Over the years I’ve tried many BBQ sauces and none have been exactly right. They would either be too spicy or too sweet or just missing the perfect finishing touch. Until now. Because just this past weekend as we were finishing out our summer cookout celebrations, I finally got the recipe for Sweet Southern BBQ Sauce perfect!
What You Will Need:
1 Cup and two Tablespoons of Ketchup
1 Cup of Light Brown Sugar
1/3 Cup of Molasses
1/4 Cup of Apple Cider Vinegar
1/4 Cup of Water
1 and 1/4 Teaspoon of Worcestershire Sauce
2 Tablespoons of Yellow Mustard
2 Teaspoons of Ground Paprika
1/2 Teaspoon of Minced Garlic
1/4 Teaspoon of Salt
1/4 Teaspoon of Pepper
Dash of Cayenne Pepper (to add a little heat)
1 Tablespoon of Cornstarch
How to Make It:
Start by mixing together all of your ingredients except for the cornstarch in a large bowl.
Stir your ingredients until they are well combined and then transfer them to a small pot over high heat. Bring the mixtures to a boil.
Once you have achieved a rolling boil, turn the heat down to low and allow your sauce to simmer. This will help it thicken slightly but it won’t get it as thick as we like it in the south. So…..once your sauce has simmered for about 10 minutes, mix together your cornstarch with a little bit of water and stir it into your sauce. Keep it over low heat until it achieves the desired thickness. Then remove your sauce from the heat and allow it to cool.
Once your sauce it cool, you can serve it as a dipping sauce, use it to baste your meat or even bottle it and save it for later!
No matter how you use it, rest assured that this sweet Southern favorite will make any meal finger lickin’ good!
