I partnered with JOHNSON’S® and The Motherhood to facilitate this post. Although content is sponsored, the #MoreHandsMoreHearts initiative is close to my heart. All thoughts on how amazing it is and pictures of donations are my own.
Pregnancy is a time in every woman’s life that is filled with wonder and awe. You’re part of growing a person. You’re preparing to be the sole person responsible for the survival of another human being. And often times, you are terrified as well as excited.
Let me take you back about 12 and a half years to finding out I was pregnant with my first son. While I was eagerly anticipating his arrival, I was also unsure of what motherhood would mean to me. At only 21 years old, in many ways I was a child myself. I knew that I could offer this little baby more love that anyone else in the world but outside of that, I wasn’t sure what our future would hold. Since I was still in college and unmarried at the time, life was a little uncertain. I didn’t know the first thing about the items I would need. Or even how to change a diaper for that matter. All I knew is that I needed to get ready fast because life was about to change.
As I navigated those last months of pregnancy and early months as a new mom, I was often confused. Sometimes scared. And always overwhelmed. I quickly had to learn to not only take care of myself but to also take care of someone else who was dependent on me for every single one of his needs. Thankfully I had a great mom and some amazing resources that helped us both to not only survive but also to thrive.
Now, that’s not to say that life those first few years was easy. There were tears (OK, most of them were mine). There were frustrations. And there were moments when above all else, I felt totally unprepared for motherhood. So when I heard that JOHNSON’S® has partnered with Save the Children® and Academy and Grammy award-winning artist, author, philanthropist, and mom Jennifer Hudson to support the happy, healthy development of babies, I wanted to know more. I wanted to know how I could help moms like me who weren’t sure exactly what motherhood was going to look like but wanted to give the best to their babies!
So, how did I do that? I joined JOHNSON’S® and the More Hands, More Hearts™ program! This great program started on December 2nd and the goal is to donate both essential resources and a special grant to Save the Children® to help moms worldwide ensure that their babies thrive. Sounds pretty awesome right? Right! So what did we do? I’m so glad you asked!
Based on the message that JOHNSON’S® cares about the healthy development of babies and are committed to supporting families worldwide, they are encouraging moms like me (and non-moms too) to help ensure that every baby has a happy and healthy start to life! JOHNSON’S® is providing great educational initiatives, product donations and financial support to help moms and babies everywhere through More Hands, More Hearts™! Through their partner Save the Children®, they are donating essential resources, including JOHNSON’S® baby care kits and a special grant, to help moms ensure their babies thrive.
But they need help! So, after talking to my now not-so-little baby about how I felt when he first came into the world, he asked if we could get involved. Through the Student Council at his school he has been volunteering his time at a local women’s shelter that helps abused women and their children get a new start. While I have been asked not to provide the name of this shelter to protect the safety of the residents, he has spent Saturdays babysitting the children there, working in the yard and simply getting to know the moms. So when he heard about the More Hands, More Hearts™ project he came to me and said “Mom, we’ve got to help the moms at the shelter!” And I have to say, I totally agreed!
So armed with a JOHNSON’S® baby care kit, we headed to Walmart to pick out items that every new mom needs! From diapers to wipes to bottles, we loaded up a basket with new mom essentials in the hopes that we would make new motherhood just a little bit easier for one special mom.
We filled our basket to the brim and I watched in amazement as my son got more and more excited about how he was helping.
It really touched my heart seeing him wanting to be so involved in the life of these new mothers. And it made me think back to when he was the little baby that needed these things. I’ll be honest, I got a little teary eyed as he taught ME the importance of giving back and talked about how he’d like to start a diaper drive at his school to ensure that all babies have the basic essentials that they need. I watched in awed silence as he loaded that basket up with as many items as he could fit because he really got what the More Hands, More Hearts™ program was about. In fact, he taught me a little something about giving through his own excitement.
I couldn’t have been more proud as I saw who that sweet little baby who once needed a little help had grown into. And yes, it was more than a little emotional watching things come full circle – from me being the one who needed help with giving him a great start in life to him giving the same to someone else.
I know without a doubt that our donation will help a baby at the shelter. But even more than that I know that this holiday season, moms everywhere will have a little less to worry about thanks to More Hands, More Hearts™! Because while our donation is relatively small, together we can all make a huge difference!
