Growing up, everyone always told me that I looked just like my daddy. I’d blush and of course laugh as they added the expected “but prettier” to the end of their statement since I was a girl. But overall, I was not only OK with this comparison; I was thrilled with it. You see my dad was tall, with long legs and kind eyes and what everyone always said was a beautiful head of hair. Luckily I did get some of his best features…including his thick, dark hair. And now that he’s no longer with us, it’s one of the things that I treasure most about myself. But in the last few years I’ve seen some changes in my hair. What was once my “crown” according to my mom had lost it’s thickness…and it’s luster. So when Vivital asked me to partner with them for a sponsored post sharing what I’ve learned about caring for your beautiful hair, I was beyond excited. Because while you may think as a woman that simply trimming those split ends and washing daily will give you the hair you’ve always dreamed of, I’ve discovered that achieving beautiful, healthy locks can be quite a hairy situation!
Now, before we move forward with what your hair care should look like, let me give you a little look back. I’ve always had super thick hair. Growing up, I kept it long and tirelessly dried and curled it every day. I had that all too popular hair flip down to an art and I’ll be honest, I used my hair in a super flirtatious way! Whether I was rocking a pony tail, letting it fall in waves over my shoulders or wearing it in a fancy up-do, I made sure my hair always looked it’s best.
Then (dun dun dun) I got preggers. And my beautiful little baby wreaked havoc on my body…and my hair. I started shedding. And I don’t mean like a hair or two here or there. I mean massively shedding to where the hubby would joke that I was worse than the dog. At first I tried to ignore it. I figured the problem would correct itself after the birth of my son. But something about that pregnancy just changed my hair completely. I was never able to get it looking healthy again so I did what any reasonable, post-pregnancy woman would do….I chopped it all off!
Armed with my new pixie cut, I was sure that my hair raising problems were a thing of the past. Except I overlooked one important detail….when your hair is not healthy long, cutting it short isn’t going to change that! Now with short hair that was thinning and breaking, I was faced with the reality that I would have to make a change. Whether the issue with my hair was due to lack of vitamins, hormones, stress or simply the fact that I was getting older, I needed to find a way to combat these horrible changes and get my gorgeous hair back!
So, I started researching. I read online articles and asked for recommendations from both my hair dresser and my friends. I avoided heat. I stopped twisting my hair and pulling it off at the roots (did I not mention that I take my stress out on my hair?). And I started using hair vitamins that were designed specifically to strengthen my hair!
Where my own efforts had failed miserably, I soon saw that simply by using hair vitamins, a hair thickening serum and shampoo and conditioners that were designed to nourish my hair made all the difference in the world. My one size fits all philosophy when it came to caring for my hair was out the window and I was a true believer in the fact that just as any other part of your body needs specific products to stay healthy and thrive, so does your hair!
Now I’m finally rediscovering hair that looks it’s best and is full and fabulous. I’m working my way back towards the hair I love one Viviscal product at a time. And I’m here to tell you that what worked for me can absolutely work for you!
