Nine years ago, when we moved into our brand new home I thought we would never leave. It had all the space we needed, sweeping mountain views and a location that we loved. We’ve been happy here. Brought babies home here. Made memories here. But now, unexpectedly, it’s time to sell.
Being somewhat unprepared when it comes to selling a home, I though we’d simply pop a sign in the front yard and wait for the buyers to come. But that’s not quite how life happens. Those of you who have bought or sold homes know this all too well. After realizing that some work needed to be done and some changes needed to be made, I set to work preparing my home for sell. While admittedly there is tons to be done when you want to sell your home and the improvements you can make are endless, with a little research I’ve discovered that prepping your home for sale really comes down to four easy steps!
Now, how did I come up with these tips that helped me get my home looking great for potential buyers? We’ll it’s easy. I thought about the things I look for in a home. Good layout. Great views. And above all, a clean interior. I’d heard a million times that kitchens and bathrooms are what sells homes. And while I didn’t want that to be my only focus, I knew that at the very least my bathrooms needed some help. After all, with three guys in my house, I don’t even want to think about what goes on behind those closed doors!
Knowing that I needed to start with the interior and work my way out, I headed to Dollar General for some cleaning supplies. Thankfully our Dollar General is super close to our home and it boasts tons of supplies that can help me get my home showing ready for prices that are amazing!
Since my focus was on getting my bathrooms showing ready first (remember…those bathrooms were going to make people want to buy!) I was thrilled to discover my trusted Scrubbing Bubbles® on sale at Dollar General. And inspired by the ability to make my bathrooms the most appealing room in my home (as opposed to what they had been previously), I started my mission of turning my home into a place where others would love to live.
Make Your Bathrooms Beautiful
At first I thought this tip meant that I needed to replace my towels and shower curtains (which of course I did) but I found that even with those changes the bathroom still looked grubby. It wasn’t that I hadn’t been cleaning it (I had). It was just that with a house full of boys, it didn’t shine. Without going into specifics about the challenges of cleaning bathrooms used by boys (nod along moms of boys), let’s just say that I needed a quick and easy way to get the bathrooms sparkling. But more than that I needed a way to maintain this clean look daily, ensuring that I was always ready for showings. And this is where my fabulous new Scrubbing Bubbles® products from Dollar General came in!
With options for every area of the bathroom including Scrubbing Bubbles® Bathroom Cleaner in Fresh Scent, Scrubbing Bubbles® Multi Surface Cleaner and Scrubbing Bubbles® Toilet Cleaning Gels, I knew without a doubt that whether it was my daily maintenance or my weekly deep cleaning, I could have bathrooms that looked AND smelled amazing…no matter how many boys I have in my home!
The best part was that Scrubbing Bubbles® are SO easy to use! I simply spray them on, watch them bubble up and then wipe them away from counters, fixtures, baths and showers that look like they are brand spanking new! Now, I know you don’t want to see my toilets (and I’m really OK with that) but I just have to tell you, ALL the areas of my bathroom sparkle and shine!
With my bathrooms looking so great thanks to a little help from Scrubbing Bubbles® from Dollar General, I knew I was ready to take on the rest of the house and get it showing ready. So, knowing that every other area of my home had a lot to live up to compared with my freshly cleaned bathrooms, I worked through the rest of my tips!
Kick Up the Curb Appeal
While the inside of my home was super important, I recently realized that the outside of it is too! It’s the first thing potential buyers see and if doesn’t give them a reason to come on in and stay a while, I’ve already lost the battle. Now, does this mean I needed to spend thousands of dollars making over the outside of my home? Nope. It does mean that I needed to make a few small (yet impactful) changes. I started by having the hubs pressure wash our house and porch. Then I added some fresh mulch and planted a a few flowers. But the easiest change I made was adding some inexpensive potted or hanging plants to the exterior to brighten it up. By making simple changes I was able to create an environment that says welcome to potential buyers and boosts my chances of helping them fall in love with my home before they ever see the inside!
Clean Out Your Closets
I’ll be honest guys…my closets were a mess, especially when it came to the kids rooms. There were boxes, bags and tons of toys. And while I at first reasoned with myself and said that nobody will notice, I soon discovered that they do and they will! Our potential buyers were paying attention to the clutter in our closets. In fact, our real estate agent recommended that we clear out half of the items in our closets to make them look bigger and appeal to buyers. So I grabbed some boxes, packed up any seasonal items I likely wouldn’t need before I move (plus the junk) and put it in storage, creating a closet that anyone would love where disaster used to be! I’ll admit I was a skeptic going into it but after seeing our cleaned out closets, I realized that they truly do make a hug difference at each and every showing!
Get Rid of the Clutter
My home is full of clutter. Pictures, trinkets and odds and ends (not to mention crafts) abound. As I looked around my home when we were preparing to sell, I realized that I had done exactly what I had set out to do…turned a house into a home. But I had turned it into MY home and I now needed to undo that so that potential buys could see it as their future home. To do this I put away pictures. I cleared out crafts. I created almost a blank canvas that would allow potential buyers to envision themselves here, instead of getting caught up in the environment I had created for my own family. While there are days where I look around sadly wondering why this no longer looks like my home, I know without a doubt that this simple change will help ensure I’m making my new house a home before long!
Once these simple steps had been taken, I stepped back and took in my work. And I have to say I was rather impressed. What had started with a desire to have sparkling bathrooms and a trip to Dollar General had turned into a sparkling home that I was proud of and I knew that buyers would love. And since I had discovered a secret weapon to always keeping my home showing ready, I felt confident that no matter what my boys bring in, my house (and especially my bathrooms) will always look and smell welcoming with no notice needed!
