With Christmas now less than a week away, I’m tying up some loose ends and working away in the kitchen coming up with last minutes sweets for my family and gifts for friends and neighbors. This time of the year, one item that is always on my to-make list is Christmas Crack. Everyone has their own way of making it…some use saltines, others use graham crackers. But it’s traditionally a toffee covered treat topped with chocolate and nuts and if you haven’t tried it yet, it’s kinda, sorta, totally amazing! In years past I’ve stuck to my recipe pretty closely and created classic Christmas Crack. but this year, I stepped out of my safe little box and combined this beloved holiday treat with my son’s favorite candy canes to create Candy Cane Swirl Christmas Crack and let me tell you, everybody’s gotta try it!
During the holiday season, I don’t think anything is a amazing of a combination as chocolate and peppermint. And this year, as I prepared to make my Christmas Crack, I figured I’d up the ante and bring this holiday delight to a whole new level. It didn’t take much more effort than the traditional recipe but let me just say, the end results are amazing!
What You Will Need:
12-14 Honey Graham Crackers
1 Cup (2 sticks) of Unsalted Butter
1 Cup of Packed Light Brown Sugar
2 Cups of White Chocolate Chips
1/2 Cup of Red Candy Melts
1 Teaspoon of Olive Oil
1 Teaspoon of Peppermint Extract
Candy Canes (Crushed to Sprinkle on Top)
How to Make It:
If you’ve ever made this treat before, our Candy Cane Swirl Christmas Crack version starts off the same. First, I placed the graham crackers on a aluminum foil lined baking sheet.
Next, I added the butter and brown sugar to a sauce pan and heated it, stirring the entire time to combine the ingredients.
Once the butter and sugar was well combined, I brought it to a boil and let it boil for 4-5 minutes, stirring regularly. Once my mixture had reach a thick caramel-like consistency, I removed it from the heat and immediately poured it over the top of my graham crackers.
After spreading the mixture evenly over all my graham crackers, I placed my baking sheet into an oven preheated to 350 degrees for six minutes. Once the sides of my pan were bubbling (don’t overcook in this step), I removed my pan from the oven and immediately added my white chocolate chips to the top.
While I allows my chocolate chips to melt simply by being on top of the baked mixture, I added my candy melts to a bowl and melted them in the microwave (one minutes on power high). Once my candy melts were warm, I stirred them to ensure they were completely melted and then added in my oil and peppermint extract, combining them well into the melted chocolate.
By this point, my white chocolate chips were mostly melted so I simply used a butter knife to spread them out, ensuring that white chocolate covered the graham crackers from corner to corner.
With my white chocolate still soft, I used a spoon to drizzle on my red candy melts and then swirled them together with the white chocolate using a toothpick.
Once I had achieved the look I wanted, I was ready to add on my finishing touch…crushed candy canes.
After adding my candy canes to large plastic bag, I gently crushed them with a rolling pin and then sprinkled them over the top of my Candy Cane Swirl Christmas Crack, gently pushing them down into the still soft chocolate.
And just like that, my Candy Cane Swirl Christmas Crack was complete! I placed the entire pan into the refrigerator for about two hours to allow everything to set. Then I removed it from the fridge, peeled off the aluminum foil and simply broke it into chunks using my hands.
The beautiful swirl of the white and red chocolate combined with the peppermint flavor of both the added extract and the candy canes made this Candy Cane Swirl Christmas Crack a holiday treat that everyone is sure to love!
Wither I’m serving it to family or gifting it to friends, it’s a sure fire way to spread some delicious holiday joy all season long!
