Being a mom of boys often feels like an adventure that never ends. Living on a street full of boys….well, let’s just say that takes things to a whole new level. Two years ago when we moved into our new home, one of my biggest requirements was that we find a home where little boys were constantly running around and playing. I wanted that feeling of a block party to be always going on outside of my front door and I never wanted my boys to have to look long for someone to play with. Well, I found just that. With a gaggle of boys ranging in age from 6 to 14 living in a close proximity to each other, every day brings new surprises. It’s not uncommon for me to look out of my front window and see a skateboard whiz by and crash into the neighbors yard….with one of the kids atop it. It’s even less uncommon for me to glance up and watch as bikes zoom down the hill leading up to our house. At first, these sights made my heart stop. Literally, I’d be standing outside with my mouth hanging open while the neighborhood husbands laughed and cheered. Each and every time the boys would head out the door, I’d find myself yelling “Get your helmet and pads!” because I just knew what was coming. Then I got smart (and creative) by finding easy ways to make safety fun for kids.
As I watched my kids head for the door each afternoon, I thought about the things that they wanted to do…riding bikes, jumping on the pogo stick, testing out the skate board. While I’ll admit that I have a tendency to be a little bit of a helicopter mom, I’ve come to accept that this is how boys play. But that didn’t mean that I wanted a day of play to turn into scraped knees or bumped heads. With my goal being to find ways to make safety fun, I did a little research and came up with some basic ways to take ordinary safety rules and make them totally awesome for the kids!
Encourage Play as a Group
One of the great things about living in a neighborhood full of kids is that there is always somebody to play with. While I know that when you get boys together, shennanigans are going to ensue, making it a rule that you never play alone was a great first step for us. Almost always, that means grabbing a friend and staying in pairs. When a friend is not around, they will settle for mom or dad but honestly, play is so much more fun for them when they are with kids who are near their own age.
Find Protective Gear that Expresses Their Personality
Truth: getting my kids to wear protective gear is all about making it cool. Neither of my boys have ever been the type that wanted what everybody else was wearing and no matter what they do, they always want to express their own personality. Combine this need to be unique with my youngest’s love of expressing his creativity and Wipeout Dry Erase Protective Gear was the perfect solution! Not familiar with Wipeout products? You should be since Wipeout is made by Triple Eight, a leading producer of action sports protective gear since 1995 that is known for safety that parents can trust.
With these unique protective gear items that allow kids to express themselves by decorating their helmets and pads with their own designs using the provided markers and stencils, encouraging safety has never been easier…or more fun! The minute we pulled our helmet and pads out, my little guy’s face lit up with delight. And once I explained to him that not only could he decorate his own helmet and pads (making them totally unique) but if he got tired of one design, he could easily wipe it off and start over again, he was sold.
Let me just say, this is the most unique and creative way I’ve seen to make wearing protective gear something that kids actually get excited about! From the ability to create their own unique and cool style to the easy to erase surface that ensures their safety gear is always ready for new designs, Wipeout makes safety fun in a way that I’ve never seem before. Not only does my son want to wear his helmet and pads now but coming up with fun new designs for different activities and different times of the year ensures that gearing up for play time is never boring!
But do you want to know the best part? In addition to making this safety gear extra fun with the ability to decorate (and redecorate) with anything their heart desires, Wipeout has also developed a series of step-by-step photo and video tutorials to inspire kids to get the most out of their protective gear. From simple to complex, these design tutorials that kids can follow make the Wipeout protective gear even more fun and help ensure that it’s always the talk of the neighborhood!
By providing protective gear that is not only cool but also allows my son to express his own, unique personality in a different way each and every day if he chooses, I no longer have to worry that he’s ditching his helmet or hiding his pads as soon as he’s out of the driveway. Instead I know that because he helped make them unique, he wears them proudly as he rides his bike, skateboard and scooter!
Wipeout Dry Erase Protective Gear isn’t just for warm weather sports though. It’s also a perfect way to protect your kids when they are sledding or taking part in snow sports. And since there’s a snow version of the Dry Erase helmet that boasts ear flaps and a goggle clip, there is no reason that safety can’t be cool all year long! We’ll be rocking the helmet all summer long and adding the snow version to our wish list for next winter!
I love knowing that no matter what my boys are getting into, with the Wipeout Dry Erase Helmet and Protective Gear they will be safe and feel cool while doing it! So as they go whizzing by, I’ll rest easy knowing that I’ve been able to provide them with safety gear that I feel good about and that they can’t wait to wear.
Reward Safe Behaviors
Getting my kids to wear their protective gear isn’t a challenge with the fun Wipeout Dry Erase items but this mama likes extra enforcement when it comes to safety. Yes, I’m that mom who has no problem bribing my kids with cookies and inviting the whole neighborhood over for hot brownies. Much like I do for homework, I’ve come up with a reward system to help make safety fun for my boys. You see, when we were on vacation last summer, the fire department would ride around and find kids who were wearing their helmets and give them coupons for free ice cream. Let me tell you, I’ve never seen my boys so excited about putting on their helmets each day. I honestly think they stalked the fire truck! Inspired by the idea, I created some simple Printable Safety Coupons that help make safety fun for kids.
I left spaces on the bottom of each coupon so that I could write in simple rewards like a warm cookie after dinner or ten extra minutes of TV time before bed. After getting the other parents in the neighborhood on board, I started heading outdoors when the kids were playing and handing out coupons. Within a day of implementing this idea, all the kids were looking for me and making sure that they had all their safety gear on.
In all honesty, I was really only giving them rewards that they would have received anyway but these fun coupons made it so much better! And when paired with the Wipeout Dry Erase Protective Gear, it was a sure fire way to ensure that any time they head out the door, they are ready for all the activities that little boys love!
