Even though cold weather has been sweeping the country the last few days, I can say without a doubt that Spring is on the way. In fact, here in North Carolina we’ve gotten a taste of mild Spring temperatures and glorious sunny days throughout the last month. While it’s given me a serious case of Spring fever, it’s also been the perfect time for Spring staycations where my family and I are able to get out, enjoy the beautiful weather and make the most of this place we call home. In order to truly enjoy where we live, we’ve started a habit of having a staycation once a month…a time where we get out and explore our amazing town while staying in the comforts of our own home. While I know that sometimes it’s preferable to stay at a hotel during a staycation, with our goal of making this a monthly habit, we’ve been opting to treat our own home like a treehouse hotel in the woods while we enjoy the amazing sights and sounds that are unique to our beautiful state. But I’ll be honest, March’s staycation almost didn’t happen because of a pesky cold. Faced with the idea of my family getting to enjoy the beautiful weather without me, I grabbed my Zicam® Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs 20 ct, put on my thinking cap and came up with a few simple tips on how to plan the perfect Spring staycation!
Pick a Date (and Treat it Like a Trip)
Since my family has a goal of making our Spring staycation a monthly affair, a little planning is in order on my part. With two kids who are involved in endless activities and responsibilities for the hubs and I, planning a staycation requires a little calendar juggling and advance planning. Once we’ve found a weekend that will work for all of us, I’m protective of it. I say no to other opportunities that arise. I tell the kids to do the same. I treat our staycation just like I would a trip out of town. That way I know it will actually happen when I say it’s going to happen.
Research Activities in Your Area
It’s easy to think that just because you live somewhere you know all there is to know about that area. Chances are, you don’t. No matter what your interests are, you’re likely to find ways to explore them close to your own home. My family personally loves the outdoors (especially during the Spring) and I recently discovered that my own hometown offers more opportunities to get out and enjoy nature than I ever imagined. After living here for over ten years, I wasn’t sure there were many activities that we hadn’t tried. But after spending just a little time online, I found a whole world of trails, bamboo forests and farms that we had no idea about. Just ten short minutes from our home was a perfect place for exploring that boasted amazing activities to keep us busy all day long.
There were rivers for throwing rocks.
Animals to discover.
And bamboo forests that were just waiting to be enjoyed.
There were plants to pick and flowers to gaze at.
It was literally the perfect area that provided endless activities that fit my family’s interests. Getting to take them in as a family was an amazing way to spend the weekend and the fact that we were outdoors again after a long, cold winter helped ensure that our newly discovered trails and rivers made for an unforgettable staycation!
Have Essentials on Hand
Remember when I said earlier that I almost missed March’s staycation because of a pesky cold? Well, it happened. And it didn’t make me happy. You see, this time of the year is the WORST for colds for me. It’s 70 degrees one day and 20 degrees the next….you fellow Southerners know what I’m talking about. I blame these temperature swings for my increase in colds but, well, it is what it is. From now until summer, I’ll catch a cold or two…mostly due to my own desire to be outside and refusing to watch the weather. What can I say? But back to our Spring staycation. Earlier this month, the boys had a three day weekend and I decided it was the perfect time to get outdoors. With temperatures expected to be in the 60’s with not a cloud in the sky, I wanted us to spend the days exploring some new trails and hanging out at a local farm. We had everything planned to leave early Friday morning so OF COURSE on Thursday night I noticed that tickle in my throat. For about the first thirty minutes I tried to ignore it and blame it on the fact that I needed to do a little dusting in the house but it quickly became clear that I was getting a cold. Knowing that it’s my own rule that staycations don’t get canceled for any reason, I reached for my tried and true Zicam® Nasal Swabs.
Over the last year I’ve learned all too well that using Zicam® homepathic Nasal Swabs at the very first sign of a cold helps shorten the duration and severity of my cold while helping me get my better back faster. Honestly, in addition to lots of fluids, it’s the first thing I reach for when a cold starts and my trusted companion to see me through the duration of it. All it takes for me to put my cold on notice is breaking open one of the Zicam® nasal swabs that are clinically proven to shorten colds and I know that I’m on my way to feeling better faster.
Since the zinc-free nasal swabs are formulated with plant-derived active ingredients that are clinically proven to shorten the duration of the common cold when taken at the first sign, it’s a perfect tool in my arsenal that helps me keep everyday events like our Spring staycations from being derailed by the common cold. And since I know that I won’t have to suffer through icky cold symptoms for longer than necessary when I use Zicam® Nasal Swabs for as long as my symptoms persist, having them on hand and ready to use gives me the confidence to stick with plans knowing that I’ll get my better back faster!
But back to our Spring staycation. Not only did I not cancel but I made sure I was prepared to get my better back faster by taking my Zicam® Nasal Swabs along with me.
Throughout our adventures, I was able to pull out the easy to use Zicam® Nasal Swabs to help shorten the duration of my cold.
I have to say, Zicam® Nasal Swabs saved my Staycation and going forward, they are a must have item anytime we’ll be traveling, whether it’s locally or across the country. Simply by having them on hand, I know that I can quickly and easily get my better back faster anytime and anywhere!
The whole idea of a staycation is to escape the daily grind without having to leave home. For us, that means leaving devices behind and being willing to just enjoy the quite while spending time together. Yes, that may mean prying my teen’s cell phone out of his hand. Yes, it may mean unplugging for the adults. But as soon as we’re surrounded by nothing but the sound of a babbling brook and the laughter of family, it’s easy to see that it’s all worth it.
Making the effort to actually block out the noise of everyday life makes all the difference. Honestly, for me, it’s the hardest part of a staycation because I feel like I’m still at home and life goes on. But truthfully, there’s nothing that can’t wait till the end of the weekend and who wants to look at a phone screen when you can be staring at this?
Take Time to Relax
While everyone’s reasons for planning a staycation are different, generally the end goal is the same…to get some time away from the craziness of everyday life so that you can just relax. So I make it a goal not to pack our staycation so full that I don’t get my relaxation time. By simply trading out timed out dinner reservations for leisurly picnics next to the creek, I’m able to bask in the sunshine as my family enjoys the fruits of my well planed Spring staycation.
Even better, we’re all able to take a deep breath, enjoy our beautiful surrounds and let the warm, glorious weather replenish our souls and prepare us to make the most of every Spring day going forward.
That leaves us feeling refreshed, renewed and ready to once again jump into our daily lives. But until we have to, we’ve gotten pretty good at ensuring that without the car trips, without the hussle and bustle of travel, without the craziness of traveling with kids and without letting a cold slow us down, we’re able to truly enjoy all the amazing things that a Spring staycation has to offer.
