For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved reading. Give me a great book and I’m content for hours, going on a journey through another time and place and discovering people that become so real I can almost touch them. While in my mind it’s always a great time for a wonderful story to unfold in the pages of a beloved book, one of my favorite places to read is on the beach. Whether it’s Spring, Summer or any other time of the year, give me a towel, a book that pulls me in and weaves a story around me and an afternoon of undisturbed time and I’m one happy mama. Knowing that a good book is a beach essential this time of the year, I’ve been on the lookout for stories that capture me and transport me back in time and recently, I discovered a new book by one of my favorite authors that has quickly zoomed to the top of my must-read beach books list!
It’s only fair that I tell you I’ve been a Kristin Hannah fan for years. If she’s written a book, I’ve read it and truthfully, I’ve never picked up one of her books that I haven’t adored. However, with her new book The Nightingale, she created a story that has captivated me in a way unlike any other. Perhaps it’s my interest in the World War II time period. Maybe it’s the fact that there are two amazingly strong but different female characters that have traits that every woman can relate to. Maybe it’s the fact that in one amazing book, Hannah weaves a story of love, loss, strength and triumph in a way that literally took my breath away. Throughout this book, I thought I knew where she was leading me but every time I’d think I had discovered the secrets of the characters, she would take me on a new journey that sometimes left me smiling and sometimes left me in tears.
I found myself unable to put The Nightingale down, captivated by the story of two sisters, Vianne and Isabelle, who both walked through heartbreakingly tragic circumstances while working to survive and make a difference in World War II. With one sister living in the countryside and finding herself and her daughter put a risk constantly by her Jewish sympathies and Nazi house guests and the other sister fearlessly fighting to help get soldiers to safety, this is a story of two incredibly strong women who lost, gained, lived and loved.
Much of The Nightingale is woven together through two different stories of two strong women who, while unaware of each other’s plights for most of the book, were tied together by the bond of sisterhood. Each found within themselves bravery that they didn’t know existed and ultimately, discovered that the bond of sisterhood is one that can survive anything.
Without giving too much away, I’ll say that The Nightingale is a book that I fell in love with in a way that I haven’t fallen in love with a book in a long time. It’s inspiring, captivating and at times heart-breaking. I found myself unable to put it down and unprepared for the emotional journey that this story took me on.
Each and every time I opened the book and turned the pages, I was once again taken back in time through the countryside and the city of Paris during a time when danger was around every corner and betrayal was a constant threat. I felt the fear, I celebrated the triumphs and I was touched by the loss that was at times unimaginable.
Kristin Hannah’s The Nightingale is one of those books that you just can’t put down and will stay up reading into the early hours of the morning. It has all the components of a book that captures your heart and your mind and changes you by the time you turn the last page. This book is at the top of my favorite books list and I enjoyed it so much that I immediately passed it along to my mom and sister-in-law, who both agreed that once again, Kristin Hannah has achieved literary magic with a book that crosses generations and connects women in a truly unique way.
Whether you’ll be reading on the beach or in your own living room in the coming months, I HIGHLY recommend adding Kristin Hannah’s The Nightingale to your must read list. Get it today at Amazon or Barnes and Noble and be sure to look for the paperback version coming on on April 25th.
