It seems like everywhere I look right now, friends are having babies. While my baby-making days are over, it thrills me to no end to see friends and family welcoming perfect little people into their homes. It makes me want to run out and buy all of those baby essentials that I discovered I needed when I was a new mom and pair them with the best advice I have on how to make those first days with a brand new bundle of joy not only run smoothly but be completely memorable as well. You might call me sentimental in some ways and in others I’d like to consider myself wise but when it comes to all things baby, there is just so much I want to share! So when my youngest son’s teacher (who we just happen to L-O-V-E big time) recently had a baby girl, all I wanted to do was create something for her that made her life as a mom easier, provided essentials for her beautiful new baby and allowed me to shower her with a little new mom love. So, I thought through some of my baby musts, came up with a beautiful way to present them and then got to work putting together a Simple Diaper Cake!
Now, I have to say, I’ve tried my hand at a diaper cake in the past but this one just turned out so special. Maybe it was the extra love that went into creating it. Maybe it was the addition of Playtex Baby™ Nurser® with Drop-Ins® Liners. Maybe it was just that having been away from babies for a few years I was seeing everything in a pink covered haze. Whatever the reason, this simple diaper cake turned out just beautiful and I can’t believe how easy it was to put together. I have to say, I think this is a must make gift for any new mom! So, how did I make it? I’m so glad you asked! While I was at Target earlier in the week picking up items for a baby gift that was as special as my son’s teacher is, I was hoping that inspiration would hit. I knew that I wanted to give her diapers and onesies. But most important on my list was bottles. Having been both a bottle feeding mom and a breastfeeding mom myself, I knew that no matter what feeding choices a new mom makes, she needs bottles on hand. As I walked up and down the bottle aisle, the Playtex Baby™ Nurser® bottles were the ones I kept coming back to.
With a design that is closer to breastfeeding since it simulates the same suck, swallow and breath patterns and easy-to-use disposable liners that prevent air from mixing with the milk and getting into baby’s tummy while being extra convenient, it was the perfect choice for my baby gift! After picking up a 3-pack of the Playtex Baby™ Nurser® with Drop-Ins® Liners, I began to have an idea of how to incorporate my baby essentials and some fun decor into an adorably simple diaper cake. After making my purchases, I headed home and set out my supplies to bring the idea I had for a simple diaper cake to life.
What You Will Need:
1 Large Pack of Diapers
3 Decorative Onesies
2 10-Inch Styrofoam Disks
Ribbons in a Variety of Colors
Double Sided Tape
Gender Specific Decorations (Optional)
Glue Gun and Glue
How to Make It:
Surprisingly enough, this simple diaper cake is crazy easy to make and I have to say, it’s totally worth whipping one up! With several new baby essentials tucked neatly inside, this seasoned mama would have loved to receive this amazing gift! To start, I pulled out the diapers and began rolling them up individually, securing each diaper with a small piece of tape that holds it in place but easily comes off.
*Seasoned Mom Tip* When purchasing diapers and clothes for your new baby or a mom-to-be, remember that most new moms get more than enough newborn items. Try sizing up and including gift receipts for items so that mom and baby can use them for longer!
Once I had completed the process on en entire pack of diapers, I glued my two styrofoam disks together. Now, I know some diaper cakes use solid diapers but I wanted to create a platform for my onesies and most importantly, the start of my cake; the bottles.
Once my discs were secured together, I lined my rolled up diapers around the outside of the disks, setting them closely together.
With all my diapers were in place, I carefully cut a piece of ribbon that was long enough to go all the way around and secured it around my diapers, using hot glue to seal the two ends together. I wanted to make sure my ribbon was tight enough that it would keep the diapers in place but not so tight that it crunched them in the middle.
Once the lower layer of my diaper cake was complete, it was time to move onto the top layer. I had left the middle of my bottom layer clear so that I could nestle my baby essentials like the Playtex Baby™ Nurser® with Drop-Ins® Liners into the first layer of diapers. I quickly pulled out my Playtex Baby™ Nurser® with Drop-Ins® Liners in the 4 ounce size since that’s a great size for smaller babies that works perfectly with milk or formula. I pulled the liners out of the bottle that they were in and set them aside to use them later.
*Seasoned Mom Tip * Regardless of whether you’re planning to bottle feed or breastfeed your baby, ensure you have bottles on hand for formula or pumped milk!
Next, I rolled up on onesies and prepared them for the middle of my diaper cake as well.
*Seasoned Mom Tip* You can never have too many onesies with a baby. Under clothes or by themselves, they are a staple for any new baby!
With everything prepared, I placed one bottle, a rolled up diaper, a onesie and another diaper along the inside of the top layer of my diaper cake. Then I repeated the process until I had created a ring inside the bottom layer of diapers.
Next, in order to fill in the inside of my diaper cake, I used the remainder of my rolled up diapers and added them to the center, placing the convenient package of disposable liners at the very center of the diaper cake.
*Seasoned Mom Tip* Using Playtex Baby™ Nurser® with Drop-Ins® Liners allows you to simply discard the liners for easy clean up! You can recycle them or simply dispose them with no need for scrubbing!
After repeating my process of using a piece of ribbon and hot glue to secure the layer, my diaper cake was almost complete.
The last thing I needed was a bow on the top layer, a small wooden painted bear on the bottom and some gender specific banners and blocks to take my already fantastic diaper cake and make it truly stunning!
With my finishing touches in place, my diaper cake was complete and in addition to boasting tons of new baby essentials like diapers, onesies and Playtex Baby™ Nurser® with Drop-Ins® Liners, it was just as cute as it could be!
I have to say, my son was almost more excited than I was to give this perfect diaper cake to his teacher and her new little addition. He was so proud of how it looked and I have to say, so was I! Because more than it just being a perfect gift for the new mom or mom-to-be, this easy diaper cake is a way to pass on some of what I’ve learned as a mom. Because while those first days with a new baby are never easy, one thing I do know is that being prepared with the essentials and giving yourself time to learn how to take care of a little human being is one of the most important things you can do in early motherhood!
