Dr Pepper wants you to appreciate the Wonder Woman in your life and has asked me to share my story.
For all of us, if we’re lucky, we have someone in our lives who has shaped it; who has shown us the true meaning of grit and grace and inspired us to be a better person. For me, that person is my mom. Even as I write that, I get chills thinking of what she’s done, what she’s overcome and how she has emerged from it all forged into a woman that I can’t help but admire. She’s been brave when the easy thing would be to run away. She’s faced loss and instead of letting it break her, she used it to refine her strength. When I think of the words Wonder Woman, it’s who she is….a woman who, each time I look at her, radiates wonder in her strength, courage, grace and conviction. It’s why, when I think of the one person who’s shaped my life and continues to inspire me daily, her name is the first one that comes to my mind. And it’s why, to me, she is truly a Wonder Woman.
It would be easy to sit here and simply share what she’s been through that makes me admire her so. While it’s her story, I’m not sharing anything she doesn’t share herself when I tell you she’s been through a double mastectomy, the death of my dad (who she was married to for 45 years) and a complete relocation during the last few years of her life when I’m sure she simply expected to be enjoying retirement. After raising two stubborn teenagers (yeah, I’ll admit it), she’s walked though the sickness and loss of her father and stepping up to help take care of her mother. She fills the role of mother, daughter, grandmother, friend and confidant on a daily basis and does it all with a smile on her face. What truly makes her so amazing in my mind is that instead of hiding these painful experiences from the world, she’s always ready to use them to help others.
You see, all anyone in her life has to do is pick up a phone and tell her that someone they know is going through a hard time that she could relate to and she’s on her way to share her story, offer hope and encouragement and even hold them when they cry. She’s reached out to friends of mine who have suffered through loss and laid her heart on the line while sharing her own journey. She’s sent endless emails to complete strangers with simple words of hope and healing in them just so that someone who is hurting knows they are not alone. She’s held new and old friends alike as they cried over a fresh loss and told them that while she can’t make it better, she understands. And she’s done it all without losing any of her joy.
For her, sharing the scars that are written on her body and her heart isn’t a choice, it’s a gift. While each person she helps may be a reminder of what she has lost, the bittersweet experience of sharing the painful steps of her journey are what have refined her from an amazing woman to a Wonder Woman. Whether it’s sharing the brave decision to choose an aggressive surgery to ensure she was around to see her family grow or re-living those first shocking days of loss in order to offer comfort to someone who is on the same journey, she never hesitates; never thinks of the cost to her but instead lays out all that she is in front of friends and strangers alike in order to offer some hope in a world that surely seems dark during those hard moments.
Each time I watch her share her story or offer comfort, I’m amazed by her strength and wisdom. I’m inspired by her willingness to open old scars and let her own pain help others heal. And I’m humbled by the fact that this amazing woman has been placed in my life to be my role model.
Watching her, my deepest hope is that buried in me there is a piece of her; a piece that no matter how dark life gets, shines with a light that encourages everyone around her. I hope that through this journey of life, I can find in myself half the strength, courage and grace that simply is her. But above all, I hope that she knows that when it comes to being a mom and a woman, there is nothing ordinary about her. She’s extraordinary. She’s amazing. To me, she’s Wonder Woman!
