During the summer months, we love to travel. Both of my boys are so involved in activities during the school year that is just makes those three glorious months of summer the perfect time to pack up the car, head out on an adventure and explore. From weekend trips to the lake to week-long beach expeditions, I’ll admit that we spend quite a bit of time during the summer months in the car. In a way, this is awesome because it means that we’re exploring and making memories. But in a way, it can also be a challenge because keeping my youngest learning on the go can at times be difficult. You see, where I can give my teen a required reading book and know that his brain in being challenged as the miles pass us by, my rising first grader is a little harder. He needs learning to be fun. He needs activities that challenge and excite him. He needs ways to engage his brain as we travel across the state. For some time now I’ve been challenging myself as his mama to come up with road trip learning ideas and inspiration that are not only fun but that also keep his little mind sharp during the summer months. Thankfully, I’ve come up with a few great ideas that make learning on-the-go fun and easy!
So, how do I take those seemingly endless summer road trip hours and turn them into a time of learning fun? After asking myself that question, I’ve come up with a few answer that are sure to thrill and delight any young road tripper!
Preparation Is Key
Trust this travel seasoned mama when I say that preparing for a road trip is essential! DO NOT wait till the morning you plan on leaving to come up with ideas that will keep your little one entertained and educated while zooming across the miles. DO NOT plan on the fly and think that you’ll be able to find something to do once you get going. I’ll tell you….I spy can only go for so long before the entire car begins to close in on you! While I’m a fan of simple games like the ABC License Plate Game and I Spy, remember that those will only last for so long and if a trip lasts longer….well, you can finish that sentence! So, it’s essential to prepare for road trips with learning road trip learning resources that make the time fly by while at the same time entertaining and educating the kids.
It’s OK to Go Old School….
Just like the fun car games I mentioned before, it’s OK to go old school for part of the trip. In fact, I make sure my car is always stocked with age appropriate reading books prior to leaving.
It’s also a good idea to throw in some learning workbooks and a few pencils to give your little one a few paper and pencil type activities to pass the time. However, for my little guy, that gets old pretty quickly. He’ll do a page or two and then want to switch things up.
So, the question becomes, how do I make learning fresh and fun? And honestly, the answer is simple. We live in a world of technology where everything is digital. When I give my child a book or a workbook, he’s momentarily entertained. When I give him a way to mesh his beloved technology with a fun learning game, he’s entertained for hours. While brings me to my final tip.
But Remember that Technology Makes Travel Fun
Any time we head out on a roadtrip, it’s less than an hour before my littlest is asking for the phone or iPad or a video. I used to get frustrated with this and wonder why he couldn’t stay entertained with the paper and pencil resources I had brought for him. But as I thought more about it, I discovered that finding an interactive way to make learning fun on the go is actually the perfect solution. Taking things one step further, I discovered that Cube-tastic! from Pai Technology is the perfect road trip learning companion for curious little minds!
Now, I know, I know…that Cube-tastic! looks an aweful lot like the puzzle cubes that entertained us for hours during our long-ago childhoods. And the truth is, it’s similar in some ways but so much better in others! As a throwback to the classic puzzle cube, the Cube-tastic! uses 3D Augmented Reality technology to pair perfectly with a FREE app that’s available in the App Store or Google Play and allows children ages 5 and older to interact with Cube-tastic! while solving the puzzles and unlocking new combinations for endless play.
By scanning the Cube-tastic! using the camera of a phone or table with the partner app, the steps to unscramble the puzzle are revealed, leading little minds through the process of solving the puzzle.
Not only does this help develop problem solving skills but the Cube-tastic! also works on hand-eye coordination and memory skills. With each new puzzle, there is a new challenge that, when solved, unlocks even more combinations!
There are so many things to love about Cube-tastic! but I have to say, my favorite is that the FREE partner app helps children solve the puzzle while challenging them to engage their brain. By pairing the Cube-tastic! with the app, the learning fun is as endless as the combinations that can be created and solved. It’s amazing for me to watch my little guy work through unscrambling the multicolored dots to solve each puzzle and the look of delight on his face once he’s completed the puzzle is priceless!
I love that we are guaranteed tons of learning fun that’s perfect for taking on the go and challenges my little guy’s brain and problem solving skills along the way!
For us, Cube-tastic! and the 3D Augmented Reality technology used by the app that pairs with it means that road trips are no longer boring! While I’ll continue to come up with fun ideas for while we travel, I don’t think anything will surpass the Cube-tastic! as the perfect way to learn on the go! I’m delighted that my son now can’t wait to get in the car and start challenging himself with endless puzzle combinations that help him learn while he’s solving them!
