A little over a week ago, I shared a very special shopping trip that the boys and I had embarked on with you. It was a trip that we were doing as part of the Champions for Kids Bag it Forward Campaign to give school supplies to children in need. So we had purchased great school supplies from Walmart to put together in a package to donate. Among our supplies were crayons, markers, notebooks, notebook paper, pencils, Elmer’s glue and more!
J-Man had been so excited throughout the entire process and had painstakingly chosen supplies that he was just sure other children would love. This Simple Service Project had really spoken to him and touched his heart as he helped to provide school supplies for children in need. It made him stop to realize how fortunate he is that he can go out and purchase the things he needs for school and had sparked in him the desire to give back and make a difference in other children’s lives. I have to say honestly that this was a very emotional project for me as I saw a side of J-Man that I have not seen before; one that was passionate about giving back and helping others. Because while he has always been a sweet child, this project seemed to really “click” for him and help him see the importance of helping others. So, he rounded up all the paper, pencils, crayons, Elmer’s glue and other supplies that we had purchased and packed the donation back pack himself (with a little help from MillerBug of course).
Once he had his bag packed, he was more than ready to go make his donation. In fact, he was urging me out the door with our back pack full of supplies.
We had decided to donate our back to school supplies to the Salvation Army. A few things had sparked this decision. For one, we had recently seen an article about how our local Salvation Army was working hard to collect supplies for the upcoming school year. But just as importantly, we felt like the mission of the Salvation Army was in line with the mission of Champions for Kids – to make sure that no child had to go without the items they needed. And after researching the background of the Salvation Army and the work they do in our community, we felt that this was a perfect fit for our back to school donation!
So, J-Man loaded up his book bag and we headed for the Salvation Army. I could hardly keep in him the car when we got there because he was so eager to head in and start making a difference. We found out that we needed to visit the donation center at the back of the building to drop off our supplies so we headed around there.
Once J-Man went in and told the volunteers what he was there for, they wanted him to meet the manager of the center. His enthusiasm and caring heart were evident and even the volunteers were touched by how important making a difference was to him. So he was taken to the front office to meet the location manager and hear more about the difference that the Salvation Army makes in our community.
It was really great to hear the difference that small donations like ours are making in the community. The gratitude that was shown for taking the time to pick up and bring in a few items was huge! And we were also told how we can continue to help all year long through food drives, volunteering and bringing in items that we don’t use anymore. The organization was great about telling J-Man how much of a difference his Champions for Kids project was going to make in the lives of children in our community. And for him that was huge! He left with the biggest smile on his face and a new desire in his heart to help anyone he could! Because he discovered that through small things, he could make a big difference! And isn’t that at the heart of what Champions for Kids is all about? Showing that one person can make a difference and that when all those “ones” come together, a truly amazing movement can be born!
I encourage you to learn from J-Man. I know that I did in this project. I also encourage you to catch his passion for helping others – I truly hope it is contagious! Beause after watching how this project affected my sweet boy, I want to see it spread like wild fire to others throughout the world. You see, to us, Champions for Kids is a two fold way to change lives. Because while it helps to change lives of children in need, it also changes the live of those who are doing the giving. And that is huge.
So, join the movement! Make the difference. Become one of millions who are no longer sitting by and waiting for someone else to help but are instead taking the mission into their own hands. Because the life you end up changing very well may be your own!
