I don’t think I have to tell you that for my pup, only the best will do. Ever since adding him to our family five short weeks ago, life as I know it has changed. I’ll be honest and say that before Ollie, I didn’t know what puppy love was. I didn’t know what it was like to feel my heart expand when four little feet pounded their way towards me followed by a wagging tail. But now that he’s in my life, I can’t imagine a day without him. I want him to be around for as long as possible and I want to only offer him the best when it comes to everything in his life. For me, that means the best carrier so that his little legs don’t get too tired on our long walks, the best itty bitty puppy clothes so that he’s warm and comfortable, the best accessories to eat out of so that he’s always assured where his next meal is coming from and of course the best dog food to fuel the wag of his tiny little tail. Recently, I combined two of these wants for him into one fun project as I created a Personalized Dog Food Holder filled with Nature’s Recipe dry dog food from Food Lion.
So, where did the idea for this fun and fabulous project come from? Pretty much the only thing I’m NOT enjoying about our new pup is that there is always dog food all over our kitchen. The kids tend to hit Ollie’s bowl when they come running by. I knock it over as I’m cleaning up the kitchen pretty much daily. Ollie even gets a little too excited about his Nature’s Recipe dry dog food and spills it himself sometimes. Knowing that I wanted a way to secure his bowl of dog food, I began thinking. I quickly came up with the idea of a holder to secure his bowl and keep his food in place but I didn’t want to stop there. You see, when my boys were babies, I personalized everything so I thought why not do the same with a rustic personalized dog food holder that was easy to make an keeps his food secure while making it easier to eat out of it.
What You Will Need
*Note: This personalized dog food holder was made on a small scale for a teacup dog. For larger dogs, simply adjust sizes to ensure the right height and fit for your dog’s bowl!*
1 Rectangular Block of Wood
1 Dog Food Bowl
Sander and Drimmel Tool for Cutting and Sanding
Vinyl and a Vinyl Cutter (Non-toxic Paint can be Substituted)
Non-Toxic Clear Finish
How to Make It
My personalized dog food holder didn’t take much time to make thanks the the skills and tools of my hubs! To start we found a tree that had fallen in our back yard and cut a rectangular piece of wood out of the center of it, leaving the bark on the sides for a rustic look. The dimensions I used for our small little pup were 15 x 10 x 5…just the right size so that he could easily eat out of his new food holder.
Once we had our piece of wood cut (it you don’t have wood available, be sure to visit your local hardware store for options), the hubs sanded it down and brushed away any excess dirt and dust.
Next, he used a measuring tape to determine the size of Ollie’s bowl and figure out the perfect placement.
I knew I wanted to personalize one side of his dog food holder so we centered our bowl on the right hand side. After checking the placement, the hubs used a drimmel tool and attachment to cut out a hole the size of our dog food bowl.
Once he had the hole cut out and sanded down so that Ollie’s bowl fit perfectly into it, he handed the project over to me so that I could take care of the personalization part. I quickly headed to my vinyl cutter and cut out both Ollie’s name and a cute dog bone. Within seconds I had a design ready to stick onto the left side our of personalized dog food holder. (*Note: If you don’t have a vinyl cutter, you can use non-toxic paint or non-toxic permanent markers to personalize your dog food holder.*)
Once my personalization was in place, all that was left to do was add a non-toxic clear finish to seal our personalized dog food holder.
With our finish completely dry, I popped our dog food bowl into place and our personalized dog food holder was ready to be filled with Ollie’s favorite dog food!
Now, for me, having the personalized dog food holder made feeding time special but filling it with the right dog food for our growing pup was what was really important! I quickly grabbed our Nature’s Recipe dog food from Food Lion that has a 35-year history of premium recipes and boasts only high quality ingredients to fuel my dog’s wag and set it next to our personalized dog food holder. Immediately, Ollie had to check things out and make sure that he approved and as soon as he caught a whiff of the Natural Recipe with added vitamins and minerals in the Nature’s Recipe bag, that little tail just started going!
As I filled his waiting bowl with a no-poultry by-product meal that is grain free and has no corn, wheat or soy, he could hardly wait to start eating his favorite dog food in his new favorite personalized dog food holder!
He immediately propped himself up and begin chowing down on the food that gives him energy and fuels his wag each and every day. It’s clear to see that he loves the taste of Nature’s Recipe dog food and I love knowing that I’m giving him a meal I can feel great about!
With is personalized dog food holder always ready to be filled with Nature’s Recipe dog food, I know that I’m doing all I can as a dog mama to feed him the best grain-free food possible for his growing body that will give him the energy he needs to go further, play harder and of course wag more!
