I’m so very excited that it’s finally time to start whipping up some of my favorite holiday dishes. I literally wait all year for seasonal favorites that I can serve up to family and friends. Over the years, I’ve not only developed my very own twists on signature holiday dishes but I’ve also created dairy-free versions for my guests that are sensitive to lactose. As a rule of thumb, when I’m entertaining I always try to have dairy-free options on hand because I have several friends and family members who can get upset stomachs caused by lactose and nobody wants to celebrate the holidays with an upset stomach! While I’ve come up with a variety of options that I have added to my holiday table, I have one dairy-free dish that has replaced the original and become my most requested holiday creation because is just that good! My Dairy-Free Sweet Potato Souffle boasts all the creaminess of the classic dish with just a few minor adjustments that make it a holiday favorite every family needs to try!
Now, I’ll be the first to admit that having the perfect sweet potato souffle is just a must for the holiday season…in fact, it’s been one of my favorite dishes since I was a girl. Since this holiday classic is an essential in my home, I’ll admit that I was hesitant to do any alternations to my tried and true recipe. However, knowing that milk is the secret ingredient in my family’s version of this dish, I knew I needed to at least try a dairy-free version and let me tell you, by using Silk® Light Vanilla Almondmilk from Walmart with the new silky smooth taste you’ll love in the recipe and making a few other minor adjustments, I’ve truly come up with a version of Sweet Potato Souffle that’s better than the original! With the smooth and silky taste of Silk® Light Vanilla Almondmilk paired with my already awesome recipe, this is a dairy-free and lactose-free holiday dish that’s a must!
What You Will Need
(for the filling)
4-5 Large Sweet Potatoes
1 Cup of Silk® Light Vanilla Almondmilk
1/3 Cup of Light Brown Sugar
1/4 Cup of Melted Coconut Oil
1 Teaspoon of Cinnamon
1/2 Teaspoon of Nutmet
1/2 Teaspoon of Sea Salt
1 Large Egg
(for the topping)
1 and 1/4 Cup of Finely Chopped Pecans
1/2 Cup of Flour
1/2 Cup of Light Brown Sugar
1/2 Teaspoon of Silk® Light Vanilla Almondmilk
1/4 Cup Coconut Oil
How to Make It
This holiday classic dish is fairy simple to make but truly makes a big impression and by substituting Silk® Light Vanilla Almondmilk which is a non-dairy milk that has 50% more calcium than dairy milk while boasting absolutely no cholesterol and no saturated fat, it’s so easy to make this dish dairy free and amazingly delicious! To start my Dairy Free Sweet Potato Souffle, of course I needed to bake my sweet potatoes. Now, there are tons of ways to do this but I like to preheat my oven to 400 degrees, pierce my sweet potatoes with a fork and cook them for about 50 minutes (it’s the simplest, non-labor intensive way in my opinion).
Once my sweet potatoes were cooked, I remove them from the oven, let them cool enough to handle them and then simple split them down the middle and scooped out the insides to make my creamy, dairy free sweet potato souffle filling!
Once I’ve scooped the insides of all my sweet potatoes into the bowl of my mixer, I add in my Silk® Light Vanilla Almondmilk, brown sugar, coconut oil, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt and mixed it on medium-low until I got a smooth, creamy texture. (Side Note: I don’t add vanilla to this recipe because the Silk® Light Vanilla Almondmilk already has the perfect vanilla flavor. However, if you prefer to use vanilla extract you can use Silk® Light Original Almondmilk and one teaspoon of vanilla extract instead.)
With my mixture perfectly smooth and ready to be added to my casserole dish, I lowered the heat on the oven to 350 degrees and poured my prepared sweet potato mixture made with Silk® Light Vanilla Almondmilk into a greased casserole dish.
Now, seriously, I could eat sweet potatoes just like this (and sometimes I do) but what makes Sweet Potato Souffle such a holiday tradition is the crunchy topping! So, with my sweet potato mixture waiting in my casserole dish, I pulled out a second bowl and quickly added my pecans, flour, brown sugar, salt and Silk® Light Vanilla Almondmilk and mixed it all together. Then I cut in my SOLID coconut oil and continued to mix in with a fork until it was combined but slightly chunky.
After spreading my topping over the top of my sweet potatoes, I placed my Dairy Free Sweet Potato Souffle into the oven for about thirty minutes, until the top was golden brown and the sweet potatoes were perfectly bubbly!
With my Dairy Free Sweet Potato Souffle ready, I pulled it out of the oven and allowed it to cool for about twenty minutes (I don’t want any burned tongues at my dinner table) and then served it up as part of our delicious holiday meal!
Now, I could tell you that I only make this Dairy Free Sweet Potato Souffle on holidays but truthfully, it’s one of my favorite side dishes to whip up this time of year! While it goes amazingly well with turkey and ham, it also pairs well with chicken and steak, making it a versatile, dairy free family favorite that perfect any time during the holiday season!
Since my Dairy Free Sweet Potato Souffle boasts the delicious flavor of a classic holiday recipe without the lactose, it’s a perfect option for serving to anyone who visits my home!
Plus, with the extra Silk® Almondmilk that’s left over when I make it, I can create a perfect lactose-free cup of coffee or bowl of cereal! Total win right? And it’s just the perfect way to make sure that I have lactose-free options that are amazingly delicious for all my holiday guests!
