Now that fall has finally arrived, I’m heading outdoors any chance I get to go on beautiful nature walks where I can take in the beauty of the rapidly changing leaves. Living in the mountains of North Carolina, fall is one of my absolute favorite times of the year. Within a matter of days, the green of summer gives way to red, yellow and orange hues that appear to light the sides of the mountains on fire. While I love to get out and explore all year round, this is really MY time of the year and the one thing that I don’t want to slow me down is pain and discomfort from a sore back or sore feet. You see, in addition to being my favorite time of the year, fall is also my busiest time of the year! Between volunteering at the kids’ school, keeping the house in order, helping my mom, working and more, I’m always on my feet. Where in the past this has limited my nature walks, this year I got smart and found the perfect way to make fall nature walks more enjoyable with a few simple tips and some help from Dr. Scholl’s® Custom Fit® Orthotic Inserts.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve found that the longer I’m on my feet each day, the more uncomfortable I get. After a full day of walking around doing a variety of activities, my feet and lower back start to get sore and the temptation to sit down becomes strong. Now, the end of the day also happens to be when I actually get everything done and am able to get outdoors for my beloved nature walks. In search of a way to do it all without the pain, I turned to Dr. Scholl’s® Custom Fit® Orthotic Inserts. After learning that the pain in my knees and lower back can often originate in my feet, I decided it was time to do something about it and find a better way to enjoy my nature walks and all the other activities in my daily life! Here’s how I did it!
Start with Dr. Scholl’s® Custom Fit® Orthotic Inserts
I’ve been using Dr. Scholl’s® for years but I’ll admit, standing in front of a variety of options and choosing the right one doesn’t always work for me. Neither does Googling endlessly….I just end up more confused! So, when I found out that Dr. Scholl’s® can now tell me the exact orthotic inserts I need in minutes with their easy to use Custom Fit® kiosk, I couldn’t wait to try it out! I quickly headed to Walmart and located the Custom Fit® kiosk (mine was in the back of the store).
This easy to use Custom Fit® kiosk that uses advanced FootMapping® technology was developed by Dr. Scholl’s® experts in body biomechanics and uses over 2,000 pressure sensors to create your own Custom Footmap. Now what is a Custom Footmap you ask? Well, it’s the perfect way that Dr. Scholl’s® uses to identify my arch type, foot length and unique pressure points! In less than two minutes, the kiosk takes all this data, does some behind the screen number crunching to evaluate it and recommends the right Custom Fit® Orthotic Inserts! Pretty cool right? So, how exactly does it work? I’m so glad you asked!
After taking off my shoes, I was prompted to step onto the kiosk by placing my feet on the black sensors and using my hands to grip the hand-bars.
I then pushed the start button and followed the instructions on the screen which would prompt me to lean forward until I was able to make a little orange ball move to the center of a circle on the screen. Once I was centered, I had to hold my position (don’t worry, it’s just for a few seconds). After doing this on both feet, I repeated the process as I was prompted, standing on just my right foot and then just my left foot. It was all super quick and easy and there was no way to mess up since the prompts on the screen led me seamlessly through the process.
Once I had followed all the steps, the Custom Fit® kiosk did its calculations and made its recommendation! Yes, it was really that easy!
All I had to do was match the recommended number (mine was 120 which means I walk on my heels) with the orthotic inserts that lined the kiosk and pick up my perfect pair! With orthotic inserts that are comprised of four layers which each provide a different benefit, the Dr. Scholl’s® Custom Fit® Orthotic Inserts provide support and cushioning for my feet so that they immediately relieve foot and lower body pain and provide me with all-day comfort! Now, I’m gonna tell you, I was SHOCKED at how easy it was to get custom orthotic inserts with the convenience of the kiosk and I couldn’t wait to try them out and see if, paired with my additional tips, they made a difference!
Stick with Comfy Shoes
Once I’d purchased my Dr. Scholl’s® Custom Fit® Orthotics and taken them home, I was ready to give them a try. While I have a variety of shoes that I enjoy wearing, I do my best to avoid heels or wedges as they tend to aggravate my lower back when I stand in them for long. After pulling out my favorite tennis shoes (Dr. Scholl’s® Custom Fit® Orthotics also fit great in my ballet flats and loafers), inserting my orthotic inserts only took seconds.
All that was required was removing the inserts from the packet and sliding them into my shoes.
I loved that they fit snugly and needed no alterations to fit any of my favorite shoes! For me, that meant that wearing them daily and alternating them between my various shoes was easy as 1-2-3! With my Dr. Scholl’s® Custom Fit® Orthotics in place, I was ready to put them to the test and see if my nature walks and all the time I spend on my feet would be more comfortable with my new inserts in place!
After putting on my shoes, I headed outside to enjoy my favorite activity of going on a nature walk.
Stick with Flat Landscapes
While it’s fun to climb the sides of mountains, starting with a flat surface allows me to keep my nature walks lower impact so that I don’t have to worry about foot or back pain. With flat surfaces and my Custom Fit® Orthotics which give me the custom support and cushioning I need to disperse my foot pressure and reduce the pain-inducing stress on my knees or lower back, I’m able to go further and enjoy more of the beautiful scenery!
Take Breaks When Needed
In addition to sticking with terrains that are low impact, I’ve learned to take breaks when needed. While my Dr. Scholl’s® Custom Fit® Orthotics help me stay comfortable with their immediate relief, it’s always nice to let me feet rest for a few minutes while I enjoy the scenery around me. However, when I’m wearing my Dr. Scholl’s® Custom Fit® Orthotics, stopping is MY choice, not a necessity because of pain!
The lower body pain and discomfort that used to fatigue me and drain me of energy is immediately relieved with my Dr. Scholl’s® Custom Fit® Orthotics so that I can keep moving…but that doesn’t mean that I don’t want to sit back and enjoy the colors around me!
Don’t Be In Too Much of Hurry
While it’s tempting to rush through a nature walk because there are so many other things waiting to be done, don’t hurry! Take your time to stroll. Look around. Enjoy the fact that you can be on your feet for as long as you want without worrying about pain and discomfort! All of a sudden, you may discover that you’re seeing the nature around you in a whole new and amazing way!
